The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Since my travel mate was exploring starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had planned a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a role with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that evening. The Iraqi student walked over to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off told my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for three years. A perk of the job was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an prestigious college and request employment. Moreover, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
