Seven alleged members of Germany's far-left organization face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was behind attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
