Senate Greenlights Measure to Release Jeffrey Epstein Documents

The Senate on this Tuesday passed without delay to legislation that will mandate the disclosure of case documents related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a almost unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a reversal by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The administration relented after an extended period of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a case that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Approval in Both Chambers

Senators proceeded by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, speeding up the process. Earlier that day, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a 427-1 tally.

“The American people have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited long enough,” the top Senate Democrat said in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to adopt it by consent. “Uncover the facts. Let transparency reign.”

Presidential Signature

The bill next heads to Donald Trump for his endorsement. Trump stated on the previous day that he would sign the measure.

Though Trump has for an extended period downplayed the controversy over the official management of the investigation as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the measure over the weekend, and said he would sign the measure if it reaches his desk.

Support and Opposition

Democrats, along with those affected and their advocates who were seated in a House gallery, cheered after the bill was approved. Lone dissent came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he feared the measure would make public specific data of people, persons of interest and others caught up in the investigation.
